Welcome to the Local Policy web page

The training for Local Council Clerks started as a part-time college course in Local Council Administration. This eventually developed into a degree course with the title’ Local Policy’. It is the only set of courses that a Clerk can undertake, which if s/he is paid to scale merits 4 increments for a Local Policy Degree.

When the 1997 group of Local Policy Graduates (28 of us) met together in 2008 the decision was to form an Association. It was thought that a more formal structure would encourage Clerks to continue to Network and hopefully not to lose touch with each other. This was particularly relevant to those not in the local council movement. A weekend reunion was held – with token guest speakers to prove to council bosses that it really was a working/training weekend. The weekend proved successful and the Graduate Association was born. A nominal fee was charged at first – this to cover the cost of postage and the printing of a regular newsletter.

SLCC confirmed on 18th March 2009 that attending a Local Policy weekend could attract CPD points. Many ex-students continue to support the courses run by the University of Gloucester.

Further weekends, which include an Annual General Meeting of the Association, were organised by enthusiastic clerks wishing to share with their colleagues the activities of their own parishes. A small profit was made at the weekends and that together with the growing use of the computer enabling electronic newsletters etc reduced the need for a subscription. Now instead paying to join – all graduates are invited to be members.
