New Clerk Support
This project, underwritten by the government via the National Training Strategy is designed to support clerks in their first year in the profession. It has been organised by the Society of Local Council Clerks (SLCC). It is available to all clerks and not just to members of the SLCC. It is part of the SLCC’s service for clerks which includes:
The training initiative:
Working with Your Council - supported by one-to-one mentors, training groups, the e-group
Partnership with the University of Gloucestershire for core and advanced training
The advisory service:
Specialist and regional advisers who help with technical matters (eg legal, financial and employment issues)
Branch membership:
Informal and social support, networking and updating
The aim of the support project is to help new clerks settle into the profession and to reduce the turnover of clerks.
The five pillars of the scheme:
- A welcome pack for new clerks including a booklet called “The Essential Clerk” and contact information
- County Support Officers (CSOs) who enable clerks in their first year to find the best way of managing their role, responsibilities and working relationships
- An informal network of local or district contacts – clerks who are knowledgeable about their area and can help a new clerk find their way around
- Regional advisors who help all SLCC members in cases of greater difficulty
