Audit Commission cracks down on local government fraud

Published 17th September 2009

"This is an important Audit Commission publication highlighting the need for all local authorities, including local councils, to have written fraud prevention and detection policies in place. External auditors may well be testing the robustness of assertions given in the Annual Governance Statement that local councils have maintained an adequate system of internal controls including measures designed to prevent and detect fraud and corruption and have regularly reviewed its effectiveness. This includes in particular those councils entitled to a Basic audit (under £200,000) who may also be selected for an intermediate audit review."
