Council Tax rises by 5.1%

The average band D council tax set by local authorities in England for 2018-19 is £1,671, an increase of £81 or 5.1% on last year’s figure of £1,591. This includes the parish precepts and represents the highest council tax increase since the mid 2000s.

The average band D precept charged by English parish councils in 2018-19 is £64.05, up 4.9% or just under £3. In each of the past two years, parish precepts have on average risen by more than 6%. Detailed figures showing precepts raised by individual parishes have still to be published by the MHCLG.

The average band D council tax increase in Wales is 5.1%, the same as in England, but there are significant variations.  The largest band D increase is 11%, in Pembrokeshire, while Rhondda Cynon Taf has the smallest increase of 3.8%.

There are no referendum restrictions in Wales and the average band D council tax in Wales in 2018-19 is £1,492, compared with £1,671 in England.
