Politics Show Debates the Issue of Clerk’s Pay

Published 23rd November 2009

This discussion from the Politics show on Sunday 22nd November highlights many of the issues which Clerks are facing in gaining acceptance for proper remunerations for their role.

Before 2004 Clerks were often badly underpaid due to widely held misperceptions of the complexity and difficulty of their roles. This situation was rectified in the 2004 NALC/SLCC Terms and Conditions agreement which re-calibrated Clerks pay in line with similar jobs in the public sector and the economy as a whole and Clerks are now increasingly being properly rewarded for the work that they do. This is reflected in the reducing number leaving the profession each year which is down from 22% in 2003 to 8% in 2009 meaning that an increasingly skilled workforce is developing within the Local Council Sector.
