This one day course explains the law relating to trusts and provides operational guidance for the trusteeship of charities.

 Course outline:

  • Statutory role: background
  • The Trusteeship role: Sole, joint and custodian, incorporated and holding trustees. Ex-officio trustees.
  • Appointment of trustees. The charity's governing document and its charitable purpose.
  • Issues to consider at registration.
  • Issues after registration: Separating charity property from local authority property.
  • Dealing with conflicts of interest.
  • Use of trustee's property by a charity and vice versa.
  • Trusteeship arrangements other than a local council.
  • Roles, duties and responsibilities: Trustees, Chairman and Treasurer.
  • Governance issues: Meetings, the Annual Report.
  • Examples of charitable trusts and how they might work: Recreation Grounds, village halls, allotments.
  • Other examples of activities within the charity's purposes.
  • Financial management of trusts: Accounting and reporting, audit and scrutiny.
  • Investment: Common Investment Fund and Deposit Fund.
  • The Charity Commission.

About the trainer:

Roger Taylor is the Senior Partner of Hedleys Solicitors, a firm based in Surrey which has an extensive practice dealing with Parish and Town Councils in England. He lectures on subjects such as Common Land, Village Greens and Charitable Trusts for the SLCC and on other matters relating to the practice and procedure of Parish and Town Councils for a number of County Associations.
