Non-Visible Disabilities Awareness Event – 15 September

This face-to-face one-day event brought to you by a group of Year 6 Community Governance students who are passionate about making local government more accessible to everyone. Taking place on Thursday 15 September 2022 at Bridgwater Town Hall.

The sector has lots of training for physical disabilities and online/Website Accessibility, much of which is covered by legislation. There is not the same level of guidance and information for engaging with people who have Non-Visible disabilities.

Building on the combined experiences of the project team during the Covid pandemic from 2020 to 2022 the vision for the day is to ‘focus on identifying and providing information on accessibility issues for those with ‘Non Visible disabilities’ such as deafness, colour-blindness, dyslexia, age related issues and some physical disabilities.

The underpinning question is ‘How to use knowledge, experience, and best practice to upskill those working in local government to make ‘accessibility the norm?.’ Covid-19 restrictions have highlighted just how easy it is to overlook non-visual disabilities and if we do think about them, how easily this can be as an afterthought.  The unintentional consequences may ultimately become a barrier and potentially exclude people from involvement in our sector.

The intention of this event is to provide lots of information that will be useful to all councils no matter their size or budget, and generate ideas, share best practice, and provide a range of steps that can be taken to make our sector just that little more inclusive.

Case studies will be an important part of the communication for this event as they can help with the knowledge impact for the non-visual disability.

The event aims to have speakers from  a variety of charities and organisations such as South West Councils and the RNIB. The day will conclude with a panel discussion and there will be lots of opportunities to ask questions during the day.
