Business Development & Research Officer

Salary: SCP 18 – 22 (£18,870 - £21,074 dependant on experience) Pro Rata


Reports to: Head of Marketing & Communications
Hours: Part time, 20 hours per week (additional hours may be required)
Location: Flexible working location which may include a monthly visit to the SLCC Head Office in Taunton

Job Purpose
We are currently recruiting for a Business Development & Research Officer to join the Membership and Marketing Team. You will be responsible for keeping up to date with developments in the local government sector in order to build relationships with new and existing council clerks and looking for opportunities to expand the membership. The role will also entail researching, writing and publishing topical news items relevant to our membership for publication on our website and/or bi-monthly membership magazine.

As this is a new role to the organisation it provides the successful applicant with the ability to shape and grow the role as necessary – the sky’s the limit! The successful applicant will need to be highly motivated with strong written and verbal communications skills with a background or understanding of the local government sector.

Specific Responsibilities
Sector News
• To liaise with advisor and sector colleagues and undertake own research in order to generate topical news items to keep members abreast of news and developments within the sector.
• To write the news item and distribute amongst colleagues for publication on the website and social media.

Communications
• To write informative communication pieces for the bi-weekly News Bulletin to members
• To liaise with the Sales & Marketing Assistant and Communications Officer to agree the information/news contained within each edition of the News Bulletin.
• To compile and write (where necessary) informative articles for publication in The Clerk magazine

The Clerk magazine
• To be involved in the proofing of each edition of The Clerk magazine
• To identify potential contributors to The Clerk magazine and feedback to the Communications Officer and Sales & Marketing Assistant.
 
Membership
• To contact new council clerks by phone/email to introduce the SLCC and communicate the benefits of membership in order to grow the number of councils in membership.
• To research new ways to expand the membership
• To provide support to the Head of Marketing & Communications and Membership Officer with the maintenance of the Society’s membership CRM, updating the records for non-members and commercial contacts on a regular basis.
• To generate new members, contacting new clerks via telephone or email to help with membership queries, verify contact details or to promote membership.
• To assist with any other membership related task as required by the Head of Marketing & Communications.

General Tasks
• To assist with any other tasks as required by the Head of Marketing & Communications.

Person Specification
Essential
• Experience or an understanding of the local government sector.
• Excellent writing and grammatical skills
• Exceptional communication skills, including the ability to ensure effective communication with a wide range of stakeholders, colleagues, members and non-members both on the telephone and face to face.
• Excellent attention to detail, including proof reading skills, with the ability to maintain a high level of accuracy.
• Excellent team working skills with the ability to work collaboratively and co-operatively with colleagues.
• Ability to organise and plan own work.
• Ability to work on own initiative.
• Ability to work to tight deadlines

Desirable
• Strong IT skills including knowledge of word processing, Dropbox and Microsoft Excel.
