Labour could replace council tax with land value tax

Published 23rd February 2018

The Local Government Information Unit (LGiU) reports that Shadow Chancellor, John McDonnell, has said that the Labour party is considering proposing the introduction of a land value tax to boost local authority budgets, replacing the current council tax system.

The tax, paid annually and based on the value of underlying land rather than property values, is popular with some economists, with supporters claiming that it is more practical, more resistant to tax evasion and encourages landowners to use land as productively as possible.

Mr McDonnell, speaking at an event organised by the Resolution Foundation, said: “I think we are at a stage where the decline in terms of funding to local government and the consequential effect on local services … means I think that people are now willing to consider more radical solutions.”
