New tax powers for empty homes

The Government yesterday introduced amendments to Bills currently before Parliament aimed at discouraging owners from leaving properties empty. Billing Authorities will be able to double council tax on properties left unoccupied for two to five years, triple it for properties left empty for between five and ten years, and quadruple it for properties left empty for more than a decade. Communities Secretary James Brokenshire said: “We're determined to do everything we can to ensure our communities have the housing they need. By equipping councils with the right tools to get on with the job, we could potentially provide thousands more families with a place to call home.” Guidelines will ensure that owners trying to sell or rent properties will not be affected.
