Proposal to halve number of Welsh councils

Published 21st March 2018

The Welsh Government has resurrected plans which could see Wales' 22 principal councils cut to 10, through mergers with local government secretary Alun Davies, saying: "Councils have been clear that services are wearing down to the point of collapse - the next step must be game-changing.”

A green paper proposes ten possible new council areas, including the mergers of the Isle of Anglesey with Gwynedd, Conwy with Denbighshire, Flintshire with Wrexham, and Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire with Carmarthenshire.
