SLCC Awards recognise excellence in the Clerks profession

Lesley Swinbank, Clerk to Hawthorn PC in County Durham, received the principal award, the Outstanding Contribution Award

At the annual awards ceremony which opened this year’s SLCC National Conference, the following awards listed below, were presented.

Chief Executive, Rob Smith, said their efforts are typical of the excellent work being undertaken behind the scenes by parish council clerks up and down the country to support their elected councillors in effectively representing and serving their local communities.

Bryan Metcalf Award - Winner: Richard Bishop, Swaffham Town Council, Norfolk

Shortlisted nominees: Rosie Hughes, Sutton Parish Council & Jane Johnston, Llandridod Wells Town Council

New Clerk of the Year Award - Winner: Jane Biscombe, Yateley Town Council, Hampshire

Shortlisted nominees: Tina Cunnell, Thetford Town Council & Sarah Haydon, Biddulph Town Council

Professional Innovation Award - Winner: Jackie Smith, Bickerstaffe Parish Council, Lancashire

Shortlisted nominees: Penny Bryant, Somersham Parish Council & Deborah Sarson, Diss Town Council

Myrna Liles Award - Winner: Gina Lopes, Norfolk Branch

Shortlisted nominees: Tatiana Cant, Somerset Branch & Lesley Hughes, Devon Branch

John Crompton Cup - Winner: Kim Bedford, Gloucestershire Branch

Shorlisted nominees: Mary Danby, Staffordshire & Andrew Husband, North Yorkshire

Best Case Study at Residential Event - Winner: Angela Howells, Westerham Town Council, Kent

Shortlisted nominees: Yvonne Colverson, North Wingfield Parish Council & Vivien Canon

Best Magazine Article - Winner: Debra Roberts, Feock Parish Council, Cornwall

Shortlisted nominees: Sarah Rodger, Warmington Parish Council & Bill Richards, Chesham Town Council

Long Service Award

Recipients: Alan Hodkin, Aston Cum Aughton Parish Council

                    John Blount, Stowe-By-Chartley Parish Council

                    Peter Taylor, Cottingham Parish Council

                    Mike Elliot, Clerk to 15 small councils in Nottinghamshire


Chief Executive Staff Award - Winner: Gemma Rickard, SLCC Head of Marketing and Communications

Chief Executive Outstanding Achievement Award - Winner: Lesley Swinbank, SLCC Professional Development Officer

Photos of all the award presentations will be appearing in the January 2018 edition of The Clerk magazine.

Nominations for the awards were submitted by branches and a panel comprising the President, Chairman of the Board of Directors and the Chief Executive, who had the difficult task of deciding upon a shortlist and the final winner. At the awards, it was emphasised that any member can nominate someone for an award to their branch, so were urged to look out for the invitation to nominate early next summer.
