A planned merger between West Somerset Council and Taunton Deane BC has been voted through, despite criticism from local councillors. Taunton Deane leader John Williams said the decision would keep up the levels of investment into its main front line services, but critics have said the merger weakens local democracy.
"It's the demise of Taunton and the reduction of Taunton to lower than county town status. This signals the end of 47 years of a council, it's a very sad day," said Taunton Deane councillor Jefferson Horsley. Taunton is at present unparished.
