Town Clerk

Applications must be returned by 29/03/2021 23:00

Lewes Town Council is one of only around 70 Parish Councils which set a Council Tax Precept of over £1million, and we own landmark buildings and offer services and wide support to the community.  Our Town Clerk retires later this year and five other members of our small team will become eligible to retire before April 2024.  His successor will help councillors to address these challenges and embrace many other changes in meeting the future.

The town clerk is the council’s chief officer and principal adviser, assisting in the formation of policies and responsible for the effective management of all its business, resources, staff and operations. We hope that our new town clerk will jump in at the deep end when they start, which we anticipate will be in August; to allow a handover from our present “TC” and to give some breathing-space to settle-in.

We seek a forward thinking and proactive town clerk to take responsibility for all aspects of the council’s operation, and hope to attract individuals with the knowledge, experience, and energy to help us achieve our goals while keeping the business and mechanisms of the council on the ‘straight-and-narrow’. This role does NOT include “s151” Responsible Finance Officer duties, as we will shortly recruit separately for that position – these roles are combined in our present TC.

Applicants must demonstrate significant managerial experience, and ideally will have relevant knowledge of local government law and procedures and hold (or must obtain) one of the qualifications prescribed to allow the council to retain the General Power of Competence.

Closing date for applications will be 30th March 2021, and applicants selected for interview will be offered a choice of either 10th or 14th May.

Final interviews will be held on 21st May. Subject to Covid-19, interviews may be conducted online.

For details of the job, the council, the town, and how to apply, please see our Applicant Pack on the council website here.
