Government Consulting on Changes to Council Tax Billing

23 June 2025

The government has launched a consultation on changes to council tax billing. The government has stated that it ‘recognises that the administration of council tax more broadly has not been reviewed in decades, and there are broader opportunities to deliver a fairer and more efficiency system for taxpayers and councils.’

The consultation looks at modernising the administration of council tax, specifically:

  • Changing the ways council tax is billed, collected and enforced

  • Modernising the support available in the system

  • Supporting councils to improve efficiency

Access the consultation here. This consultation closes at 11:59pm on 12 September 2025.

The government has also published information on how changes to the administration of council tax will make life easier for working people. Read more here.

In addition to the above, the government has launched a consultation on fairer funding.

Jim McMahon MP, Minister of State for Local Government and English Devolution, made a statement on 20 June on both consultations, which you can read here.
