Government announces high street ownership register

20 May 2019

The Government has announced that a new register is to be set up to make it easier to find out who owns empty buildings, as part of efforts to revitalize Britain’s high streets.

The announcement follows research by Estates Gazette for the BBC, which found nine different categories of ownership, ranging from small private companies to overseas corporations, which can make it difficult for prospective tenants to identify landlords and for landlords to work together on regeneration strategies.

High Street Minister, Jake Berry, said the Government is also “working to enhance powers of local authorities to proceed with compulsory purchase orders to end fragmented ownership,” and that the register will be piloted in individual local authorities.
