The first of SLCC’s brand-new Basics Bootcamps took place in the East Midlands on 22 May 2025.
Designed to support local council clerks with practical insights and essential updates on key issues impacting town and parish councils, the event welcomed 41 enthusiastic delegates for a day packed with expert-led sessions, valuable networking, and exhibition.
The bootcamp was the first in a trio of regional events, with the next one taking place in Wales on 16 July, followed by the South of England on 19 November.
The East Midlands Basics Bootcamp featured a series of sessions, followed by interactive Q&As, including:
- An overview of what councils need to know when employing staff, including legislative updates and future changes
- An in-depth look at the English Devolution White Paper, how it may impact local councils, and how the sector can prepare for potential changes in governance and service delivery
- Insights into how councils can influence planning decisions, navigate key legal considerations, and what the government’s planning reforms mean for the future
- Exploring key environmental issues, looking at how councils can get involved, and how SLCC is working to support new local initiatives
- A guide to SLCC’s professional qualifications, from the Level 4 Certificate in Community Governance to the Level 7 Masters in Public Leadership
- An update on VAT essentials
