Active Travel England and 12 mayors of England’s combined local authorities have committed to working together to develop a national network for walking, wheeling and cycling across England.
Published by the Department for Transport on 2 July 2025, the joint statement outlines a shared ambition to improve the country’s streets to improve health, wellbeing and connectedness of communities.
The plans include:
- creating a national active travel network to give healthier and greener travel options to millions of people
- pledging to provide 3,500 miles of safer routes to schools, shops and high streets, workplaces and transport hubs
