Overview

You are invited to join representatives from the government’s new Office for Place to hear more about the Design Code Pathfinder Programme and the work local authority and neighbourhood planning group partners have undertaken to deliver more healthy, beautiful, popular and sustainable places.

Design Codes have come to the fore especially following the publication of the National Planning Policy Framework in 2021 which highlights their role by local planning authorities, developers and communities. This including local councils who many expect to be at the forefront of their development.

In March 2022, the government announced the Design Code Pathfinder Programme, under which it awarded 25 areas in England a share of £3 million to help them set their own standards for design locally through locally formulated Design Codes. The 25 included four neighbourhood planning groups (including one town council), 20 local planning authorities and a development corporation.

They have been preparing design codes using the processes set out in the National Model Design Code, and at different scales, including site specific codes, neighbourhood, parish and local authority-wide codes.

Pathfinders submitted their draft codes at the end of May, and this event is an opportunity to share the programme’s learnings with locals councils, who many expect to be at the forefront of their development both in terms of directly developing them and shaping ones produced by developers and local authorities.

Open to clerks and councillors.
