Government announces plans to tackle illegal traveller sites

The Government has set out is plans to make it easier for councils to intervene and remove travellers from land they should not be on.  

The follows an initial consultation by the Government to look at how to strengthen the response from police and local authorities to deal with illegal traveller sites to look at how to strengthen the response from police and local authorities. The Society responded to this consultation as did many other parish councils and numerous other bodies and individuals.

The Government announced that it would provide principal councils with practical and financial support to handle unauthorised encampments. It is also considering making it a criminal offence to set up such camps (it is currently defined in law as trespassing, a civil matter) and will consult on “strengthening” planning policy around such unauthorised development.
