The Council

Ottery St Mary Town Council is situated in the heart of Devon – six miles from Sidmouth and twelve miles from Exeter.  It is a small market town with a number of independent shops. The Council normally has 11 elected members (we currently have 9 Councillors). The next elections will take place in May 2023.  The Council has a large property portfolio including the Council Offices, Allotments, Museum, Station Community Hub, Cemetery etc. We have a population of approx. 16,000 inhabitants, which has grown significantly due to increased housing development.  The staff currently consists of a Chief Executive Officer (`CEO`)/RFO, Support Officer and an administrator/receptionist.


The Role

Administrator/Cemeteries officer:

Ottery St Mary Town Council is seeking to appoint an officer to our team of staff. This is an exciting new role which is being created. The Council is a forward-looking organisation serving the residents of Ottery St Mary and surrounding area to deliver high quality services and amenities. The Council Administrator will:

  • be responsible for the management and maintenance of the Council’s property portfolio.
  • be responsible for overseeing the safety and maintenance of the Station Community Hub and ensuring that the premises are in compliance with all applicable regulations.
  • be responsible for recommending and coordinating improvements to the Council’s property as needed to ensure safe, functional and appealing spaces.
  • be responsible for supporting the delivery of the Coast to Country Tourism project including Tourist Information points within the town.
  • be responsible for all enquiries relating to the Cemetery including liaising with funeral directors and memorial masons and relatives of the deceased  and attending the cemetery when burials are taking place; to have knowledge of burial law and cemeteries regulations, and the confidence to apply them firmly and consistently, to specific situations (eg transfer of Exclusive Rights of Burials etc) To ensure that the Council’s burial records and data base are maintained
  • be responsible for ensuring the effective development and delivery of Council projects and initiatives
  • be required to liaise with the community and strategic partners in the scoping, planning and delivery of projects and initiatives.
  • be required to cover for the CEO and Responsible Financial Officer when they are absent due to holiday leave or illness.

This is a part-time role which involves attendance at some evening meetings and occasionally working outside office hours. The successful applicant will be supported to achieve the nationally accredited Certificate in Local Council Administration.

Pay Grade: LC1 SCP 14 – 18 (£25,409 – £27,344 pro rata)
