Communications Officer

Salary: SCP 24 – 28 (£31,099 – £34,723 Pro Rata) Dependent on experience.
Reports to: Head of Marketing & Communications
Hours: Part time, 30 hours per week
Location: Flexible working location which may include visits to the SLCC Head Office in Taunton


Job Purpose
To work with the Head of Marketing and Communications (HM&C) and SLCC colleagues to develop and deliver SLCC’s communications plan. Play an integral role in the delivery of internal and external (member) communications as well as managing the delivery of The Clerk magazine.

Specific Responsibilities

The Clerk

  • Manage all aspects of The Clerk magazine from creation to delivery to members
  • Arrange bi-monthly meetings to brainstorm articles for the upcoming editions and meet annually with Editorial Policy Committee to confirm special features for the upcoming year
  • Write the introductory and Rob’s Reflections articles (where required)
  • Phishing for articles – liaise with potential contributors and offer article suggestions
  • Agree draft outline of the edition and contact/chase contributors
  • As drafts arrive, provide suitable sub headings and layout suggestions
  • Proofing – to proof and technically edit the articles where relevant
  • Sharepoint – upload the completed articles to the shared drive along with high res imagery and compile a list of outstanding articles/imagery
  • Meetings – to have regular meetings with Marketing Assistant and external designer to discuss outstanding items as well as commercial artwork

Communications

  • Write and send internal communications such as the staff news bulletin, along and external press releases where required
  • Member communications – write the introduction in the bi-weekly news bulletin to members and other relevant communications and promotions such as news items, event promotion, branch and professional development updates, promotional literature etc
  • To liaise with advisors and sector colleagues, and undertake own research in order to generate topical news items to keep members abreast of news and developments within the sector
  • Write new copy for the website (where required)

Social Media

  • Posting on social media (including content research) shared with HM&C

General Tasks

  • To assist with any other tasks as required by the HM&C

Person Specification

Required Skills:
Previous experience of local government (ideally as a local council clerk)
Excellent copywriting skills with experience of writing content
Strong attention to detail with experience of copy proofing
Competent user of Microsoft Office
Ability to work to deadlines
Excellent communication skills
Ability to work as part of a team
