Deputy Parish Clerk

Applications must be returned by 24/02/2020 09:00

Almondsbury Parish Council is a large and busy local authority just north of Bristol, falling within the South Gloucestershire Council area. It now wishes to appoint a proactive and energetic Deputy Parish Clerk to support the day to day working of this busy Parish.

The ideal candidate will have experience of working in local government, and will hold the CiLCA qualification, or be prepared to achieve it within 18 months of appointment. The post is for 20 hours per week, details to be agreed with the successful candidate, with some flexibility for attendance at an average of 2 evening meetings per month.

You will provide general support to the Parish Clerk, and will have responsibility for two particular areas of work. These are the council’s extensive open spaces, including play areas, playing fields and wooded areas; and managing the ongoing maintenance of the community centres and halls for which it is responsible.

You will act as the Committee Clerk to the Open Spaces Committee, compiling the agenda, attending the meeting to take minutes, and carrying out any decisions made. You will be expected to research costs and present projects to the Committee and the council. You will develop good working relationships with various contractors, both working within our open spaces, and those who may be providing services to our buildings. Some knowledge of health and safety issues and building maintenance is an advantage, along with interest in, and understanding of, outdoor projects and the challenges they may present. Training and support while you develop in this role will be provided.

As deputy clerk you will need to stand in for the clerk from time to time, and will be expected to attend the monthly Full council meetings. Good communication skills, both written and oral, are necessary for the successful performance of this role. It’s busy, varied and occasionally challenging!
