Newport Pagnell Town Council is a forward-thinking council with a precept in 2021/22 of £953,996. It manages a huge range of services including: five allotment sites, three community centres, extensive sports grounds and pavilions, a youth club and a leisure centre, which brings in a further £1.6m in income via our leisure consultant.

Newport Pagnell is a Historic Town, with a population growing towards over 18,000, and possibilities of a future boundary review increasing this to 26,000. The town council has just submitted its second Neighbourhood Plan for examination and is working on Version 3 of the Neighbourhood Plan, focusing on town centre and retail improvements.

The town council is seeking a Deputy Clerk/RFO to replace two part-time posts of retiring staff. This is a full-time position with a NALC pay scale between SCP41 and 49 according to experience. Ideally the successful candidate will hold an AAT and/or CiLCA qualification or be prepared to work towards achieving one of those qualification within the first 12 months of joining. Local council benefits such as the Local Government Pension Scheme, training and 29 days holiday leave will apply. There is a possibility of working one day a week from home, post the Covid-19 restrictions, but incumbents should be prepared for a challenging work load and significant new challenges as the town council moves at a rapid pace and works towards increasing its devolved services and assets. Several staff report directly to this incumbent. See Job Description and Job Specification available below. This post offers the opportunity to work within a super council with possible future career expanding opportunities on the Town Clerk’s retirement.

In the first instance we ask that CVs, accompanied by a covering letter outlining why the candidate might be suitable for the position, are emailed to [email protected] by 12th April 2021.

Short-listed candidates will then be asked to attend a Zoom meeting with the Town Clerk in April 2021 and may ultimately be asked to meet with several members of the council before an appointment is made. Appointment will be in August 2021, to allow for several months of training with existing employees before their retirement in November.
