Salary:  Starting salary SCP point 37, £41,591 per annum, pro rata, plus Local Government Pension Scheme. Salary valuation for the role SCP 37 – 41, £41,591 – £45,648 depending on qualifications and experience. A further salary review will be completed following 3 months of employment.

Hours:  Part time contract of 21 hours per week, this includes some evening work and the occasional weekend.

Location: Paulton Parish Council Office, Village Hall, Farrington Road, Paulton.


An exciting opportunity has arisen at join Paulton Parish Council, for someone to join our team as Parish Clerk for Paulton.

Paulton Parish Council is a progressive Council and is looking to appoint a dynamic, enthusiastic and proactive Clerk to take the Council forward. The Parish Council is overseen by 17 Councillors.

The Clerk is the Proper Officer of the Council and is under a statutory duty to carry out all the functions of the Council, and to serve or issue all the notifications required by the law of a local authority’s proper officer.

The Clerk will be responsible for ensuring that the instructions of the Council in its functions as a Local Authority are carried out. The Clerk is expected to advise the Council on, and assist in the formation of policies.

As senior administrative officer, the Parish Clerk’s duties include organising and attending Council and committee meetings, taking, and circulating minutes and agendas. Meetings are held in the early evening, so some flexibility over working hours is required. Additional responsibilities include line management of five members of staff, monitoring and managing the Council’s estate, which comprises playing fields, parks, cemetery, allotments, library and a cemetery lodge. The Clerk also deals with enquiries from residents, other authorities, suppliers and councillors, so good communication skills are essential.

This role does not include Responsible Financial Officer duties, as this is a responsibility of the Deputy Clerk/Finance officer. You will need experience in leadership, staff development and ideally have the relevant knowledge of local government law and procedures and hold the CILCA qualification.
