Local Government Minister announces plans to give town & parish councils more powers

10 July 2020

As reported in the MJ magazine, Simon Clarke MP, speaking at the virtual Local Government Association (LGA) conference announced big changes ahead in the autumn White Paper on devolution which earmark more powers for town and parish councils, allowing them to be ‘genuinely empowered’.

Mr Clarke recognised the ‘vital contribution’ that local councils make to their communities and acknowledged the important part they have to play in any future devolution agenda.

Importantly, given the severe financial impact on many local councils caused by the pandemic, he called on principal authorities to ‘apportion’ necessary funds to town and parish councils from the £500m pot of government aid announced last week.
