Michael Gove Comments on Double Devolution

23 November 2021

Speaking at the County Councils Network (CCN) conference on 22 November and reported by the Local Government Chronicle (LGC), the Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, Michael Gove MP, told the conference that he is ‘very keen that parish and community councils are part of a double devolution element.’

More information and specific details will be released by the government as part of the levelling up white paper.

Mr Gove also stated that, ‘there is a levelling up dimension to this as well in that one tends to find…that it is the case that parish councils are predominantly found in the leafier, more southern councils than they are in other parts of England.’

‘What we want to do is to make sure that they are a…means of ensuring communities can feel their interests, especially in a case like Somerset where unitarisation is taking place.’
