Voter ID trials coming at local elections

18 April 2019

The BBC looks at new voter ID trials to be held during the local elections in May, which will see voters in Broxtowe, Craven, Derby, North Kesteven and Braintree required to bring one piece of photo ID or two forms of non-photo ID, those in Mid Sussex, Watford and North West Leicestershire asked to bring their polling card or photo ID, and voters in Pendle and Woking required to show a photo ID.

Two other councils, East Staffordshire and Ribble Valley pulled out of the trial. Willie Sullivan from the Electoral Reform Society said the voter ID plans were akin to using “a sledgehammer to crack a nut,” and that “innocent voters” would lose out when the government “locks ordinary people out of democracy.”
