A Whale of a Time at Weston-Super-Mare’s Revamped Water Adventure Play Park

WSM_268-scaled.jpg (2560×1707)Weston-Super-Mare’s beloved Water Adventure Play Park has undergone a dramatic transformation into a vibrant, seaside-themed destination that celebrates the spirit of the town. Nestled just off the lively promenade, the location offered both opportunities and challenges. Years of exposure to salty sea air had caused the timber play structures to deteriorate, and the entire site suffered from poor drainage. Add in high seasonal footfall and the presence of underground flood defences, and it was clear the new design needed to be resilient, inclusive, and carefully considered.

Proludic was chosen for our proven track record in delivering coastal play spaces that are both imaginative and built to last. Our robust, innovative product range, crafted using high-pressure laminate (HPL) and structural steel with lifetime guarantees, offered the perfect solution. But durability was only part of the goal. Our mission was to create a standout play destination that would engage, inspire, and welcome families for years to come.

Inspired by the Sea

At the centre of the new design is the impressive J2696 Whale from Proludic’s Aquatica range, a show-stopping, 10.42-metre-long structure packed with 59 play features. With internal net climbs, Perspex window slides, hammocks, and swings, the whale offers a physically engaging and socially interactive experience that fuels creativity and adventure for up to 70 children at once.

Just steps away stands the striking J47251 Lighthouse, rising to 6.9 metres high. Featuring a spiral staircase, high fire pole, and panoramic viewing platforms, it accommodates 18 users with 12 exciting play elements. Together, the whale and lighthouse bring a coastal narrative to life, turning the park into a mini seaside adventure zone.

Designed for Little Explorers

Younger visitors haven’t been forgotten. A dedicated toddler area offers safe, sensory-rich play with the J2646-M Odyssey, J2615 Little Boat, and inclusive J2406 WOK Spinner. These elements are ideal for children as young as two and support important developmental milestones through tactile and interactive experiences. Their proximity to key amenities means families can play together while staying close to everything they need.

“The play area has been taken to another level with this design that Proludic has done. We’ve captured the seaside themes—fish and chips play panels, interactive features, and of course, the Whale!”
Sarah Pearse, CEO & Town Clerk, Weston-Super-Mare Town Council

Play for All

Accessibility and inclusion were key from day one. The park features an inclusive swing seat, communication panel for non-verbal users, accessible surfacing, and wide, smooth pathways for wheelchair users. A tactile sensory trail winds through the site with seven distinct surfaces, connecting themed zones and offering an engaging, multi-sensory journey. Older children can take on additional challenges with “play on the way” elements like sound panels, balance boards, and the J3501 Rodeoboard.

Strategically placed picnic tables, benches, and shaded areas allow families to relax and keep an eye on children across different play zones. Every design choice was made with visibility, safety, and ease of movement in mind.

Despite the complex site requirements, Proludic’s design has delivered a bold, inclusive, and joyful play space. The revitalised Water Adventure Play Park is now a must-visit destination—where coastal charm meets imaginative play, and children of all ages can truly have a whale of a time.
