Overview:


This practical course will raise your awareness of obligations under equality and diversity legislation as well as enabling you to create realistic goals to improve personal and team practice back in your workplace. It will include exploration of situations and scenarios which you may face in your day-to-day work.

 

Who should participate in this course:

Course Aim:

  • To improve self-awareness of your current practice
     
  • To set realistic individual and team targets to improve your working practices around equality, diversity and inclusiveness

 

At the end of this course you will have:

  • Explored and current equalities legislation including identifying groups with  ‘protected characteristics’
     
  • Explored the negative effects of stereotyping and labelling
     
  • Explored the origins and effects of prejudice and discrimination
     
  • Reflected upon your own organisation by identifying the physical and cultural barriers to inclusiveness that exist and how they can be reduced
     
  • Identified improvements to your professional approach to working with residents, customers and service providers with extra support needs
     
  • Identified positive improvement areas for making your written materials and marketing materials more accessible and inclusive
     
  • Set SMART goals to embed and maintain the improvements you have identified

About the Trainer:

Jim McNeill’s career history is both diverse and impressive. He puts it down to hard work and determination but agrees it may also be that he’s just been around a fair while now. Here’s the abbreviated version.

He realised quite early on that working in blast furnaces and down mines was probably not for him so left to go walking. When he eventually came back he went to college and qualified in Hotel and Catering Management after which he set up a number of catering initiatives involving the recruitment and training of staff with mental health issues and learning difficulties. 

From there it was a short leap into Social Services where he worked with adults with learning difficulties quickly moving into a senior management role.
