Sandwich Town Council seeks a highly motivated and proactive Town Clerk.

The key responsibilities are to carry out the statutory duties of a Proper Officer (as required by the Local Government Act 1972) by ensuring that the Council conducts its business properly.

To provide independent, objective and professional advice and support to the Council and the Toll Bridge Fund Trustee in the fulfilment of their obligations.

To manage and supervise Council staff, and provide governance to projects, the business plan, civic events, meetings and all administrative functions.

The successful candidate will have exceptional organisational, communication, and administrative skills. We seek an individual with enthusiasm, ambition and a strong commitment to this important role. Applicants should meet the following criteria:

  • Suitably qualified and experienced in Local Council Administration (CiLCA or similar)
  • Experience of governance to charities
  • Highly professional and ethical
  • Provide timely, professional and objective advice to councillors
  • Strong communication skills both oral and written
  • Ability to work under pressure and adapt to changing priorities and timescales
  • Ability to plan and prioritise work, set targets, delegate and achieve agreed outcomes
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for dealing with staff, residents, councillors, dignitaries, service providers, suppliers and customers
  • Team leadership, ability to organise and manage resources effectively

Sandwich is one of the five original cinque ports and has been described as the most complete medieval town in England, with a population of around 5,000 and a current precept of £330,000. The Council is sole Trustee for two separate charities with funds amounting to £5M that provide additional annual income.

The Town is situated close to the Kent coast and surrounded by several picturesque villages and gentle countryside. The Town Council has sixteen members of council and nine members of staff serving an active and involved electorate.

Working Hours: 37.5 Hours per week but must be prepared to work evenings and occasional weekends.
Pension: Auto enrolment in local government pension scheme.
Paid holiday: 25 days per year.
Location: The Guildhall, Cattle Market, Sandwich CT13 9AH.
